Passport Renewal

We would be happy to help you renew your U.S. passport.   Instructions for renewing vary according to the condition of your current passport, when your current passport was issued and your age.  Below are two sets of instructions for adult renewals and one set of instructions for renewing a child’s passport.

Due to security procedures, we are only able to admit visitors who have business with the consular section, their minor children, or a companion to provide necessary physical assistance.  We are not able to admit other visitors without prior special arrangement. If there will be someone accompanying the primary applicant, like parents of a minor child or a companion to provide physical assistance, please email the consular section and provide the name of the primary applicant, the names of anyone accompanying the primary applicant, and the date of the appointment.

Please note that if you are driving to Ljubljana from Italy, Austria or Croatia, you will need to stop and purchase a vignette for your car before driving in Slovenia.  Using Slovene highways without a valid and properly-displayed vignette in a vehicle is considered a violation of the law; drivers may be fined between EUR 300 and 800.

Adult Passport Renewal (ages 18 and over) - The following instructions apply to you if:

  • You are at least 18 years old; and
  • Your most recent passport (diplomatic, official, or tourist) was issued when you were 16 years of age or older; and
  • Your most recent passport (diplomatic, official, or tourist) was issued within the last 15 years; and
  • You are able to submit the passport (diplomatic, official, or tourist) with this application; and
  • You are not requesting a change in the passport data, other than a name change due to marriage or a court order

Step One: Gather together the Required Documents

  • Print out, complete and sign Passport Form DS-82
  • Locate your current or recently expired passport
  • One passport photo – 2 x 2 inches (5 x 5 cm) against a white background.  There are several photo studios close to the Embassy that are familiar with our passport requirements.
  • If you married after your last passport was issued and you would like your married name to be reflected in your new passport, please be prepared to submit your original marriage certificate.  If the certificate is written in a language other than English or Slovene, you will need to present a certified translation.
  • The fee for a passport is US$110 or 88€ and for a passport card is US$30 or 24€.

Step Two: Decide how to submit your application.  Renewals can be processed either by personal appearance at the Embassy or by mail.  Please note that we only offer the mail-in option for residents of Slovenia.  If you live in Croatia, Italy, Austria, or are just traveling through Slovenia, we must see you in-person.

  • In-person renewals: If you would like to come see us in-person, please make an appointment through our online calendar and bring the documents listed in Step 1.  You can pay the passport fee in either cash or by credit card.  Once the passport has been printed in the States and shipped to our office, you can either pick it up at the Embassy or we can mail it you.  If you prefer the mailing option, please bring us an A4-sized padded envelope (podložena kuverta) with €.92 in Slovene postage stamps affixed to it.  Note: We only mail documents within Slovenia.  If you live in Italy, Croatia, or Austria, you will either need to pick up the passport at the Embassy or use a friend’s address in Slovenia for the mail.
  • Mail-in option: If you would like to apply by mail, please send the items listed in Step 1 to the Consular Section.  Our mailing address is U.S. Embassy, Attention: Consular Section, Prešernova 31, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia.  It is very important to list a phone number and email address on your passport application so we can contact you if there are any problems.  For mail-in services, the fee must be paid by credit card.  Download the credit card payment form (PDF 117 KB), complete it, sign it, and enclose it with your passport application and supporting documents.  Passport fees will be charged to your card in U.S. dollars.  The Embassy cannot accept debit cards, any credit cards other than those indicated on the payment-by-mail form, personal checks, cash by mail, or overpayment amounts.  Please also enclose a self-addressed A4-sized padded envelope (podložena kuverta) with €.92 in Slovene postage stamps affixed to it.
