Ambassador Robertson Joins Slovene Mountaineers on Earth Day

Ambassador Robertson joined the President of the Alpine Association of Slovenia and Mayor of Preddvor, Franci Ekar, in a walk organized by the Preddvor Alpine Section to mark Earth Day on Friday, April 22, 2005. The approximately one hour walk through the forest and mountain terrain was also devoted to learning about the nearby cultural and natural heritage sites.

The tour began at the monument to Josipina Turnograjska near the Turn castle.  The participants proceeded to an area where the Ambassador, the Mayor, and the owner of the property planted a linden tree. From there, they walked to the "new castle" dating from the 12th century and then to the "Draga" valley and the source of the Bistrica spring water.

The tour was led by the chief of the Preddvor Alpine Section, Zivko Drekonja.  Members of the Kranj-based Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage acquainted the participants with the cultural and natural heritage, and the Director of Slovenia's CIPRA chapter
(International Commission for the Protection of the Alps), Jernej Stritih, talked about protecting the Alps and the highlands.
