How to Apply

No appointment is needed to apply for a visa: applications for non-immigrant visas are accepted Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 9:00 until 11:30 a.m. Applicants can pay the nonrefundable $100 application fee (payable in cash in U.S. dollars or Slovene tolars) at the Embassy. Usually, applicants can pick up their visas the same day that they apply. However, delays are sometimes unavoidable. Applicants are strongly advised to apply in plenty of time before their date of travel.

Note: journalists traveling to the U.S. on assignment require the appropriate visa.

Save time and fill your application out online! Click here to fill your application out online (sorry, English only - Slovene to come). After filling out the application, you can print out the completed application on your printer. The completed application will include a barcode. When you apply, consular staff can data-enter your application using the barcode, which saves time. As a result, you'll get faster service when applying.

  • What is needed to apply for a visa? To apply for a nonimmigrant visa each applicant must pay a non-refundable application fee (currently US $100), payable in cash in either U.S. dollars or Slovene tolars (payable at the Consular Section), and submit the following: A Form DS-156 Application Form filled in completely and signed.  Each individual traveler must have his/her own application.  Children required their own application. Male applicants between the ages of 16 and 55 must also submit Form DS-157.  Blank forms are available on-line or can be picked up at the Consular Section.
  • A passport valid for travel to the United States and with a validity date at least six months beyond the applicant's intended period of stay in the United States.
  • A recent photograph. The photo should measure 2 inches square (50 mm). The head (measured from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin) should measure between 25 mm and 35 mm. Photos may be either black & white or in color. The person must be facing the camera directly. The photo must be taken against a white or off-white background.
  • The Consular Officer may ask to see evidence substantiating the purpose of the trip and the applicant's intention to depart from the United States after a temporary visit.  Such evidence might include: a letter from the employer, documents describing the applicant's plans while in the U.S., and other evidence showing why the applicant would return abroad after a short stay, such as family ties, employment, or similar binding obligations in his/her home country.

Additionally, some types of visas require additional documentation:

Note: students with I-20 forms with an issue date of September 01, 2004 or later, also need to submit proof of payment of the SEVIS service charge (such as a receipt or Form I-901).

Exchange visitor visa applicants should also submit Form DS-2019 (issued by the agency sponsoring the exchange program) and supplemental application Form DS-158.
