Digital Video Conference for Defense Students on U.S.-EU Cooperation in NATO, Ljubljana, March 12

U.S. Embassy Ljubljana organized a digital video conference for 25 fourth year under-graduate students of defense studies at Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. The major topic discussed was cooperation between EU and U.S. within North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Alejandro “Hoot” Baez, Deputy Political Advisor for Partnership and Enlargement Issues at the U.S. Mission to NATO addressed a wide range of issues including: the transformation of NATO from the Cold War to a 21st Century organization; political versus military organization; the enlargement agenda for NATO; the summit taking place this April in Bucharest; and peace-keeping operations and collaboration with other countries, such as Japan, New Zeeland and others outside the alliance. He also touched on the challenges of the new cyber threats and environmental security. Mr. Baez served as acting deputy political-military affairs counselor at Embassy Baghdad for one year, and students encouraged him to share his experiences from the field.
