Slovenian Troops Depart for Afghanistan Aboard U.S. Air Force C-17, Maribor, August 16

On August 16, Slovenian troops departed for Afghanistan from Maribor Airport aboard a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.  The 59 troops will replace 54 troops based in Herat, a town in western Afghanistan, and will join 7 soldiers who arrived at the base in July.  There the troops will participate in a Provincial Reconstruction Team as part of the NATO International Security Assistance Force.  This was the first C-17 airlift carried out by the Slovenian Armed Forces and, according to American officers and soldiers who assisted in the operation, it was executed flawlessly.  The Americans stated that the Slovenian airlift team was “one of the best” they had ever seen.
